Follow-up care services

Where to turn to - further tips

The University counseling center does not provide psychiatric care or a long-term therapy. It does not take the place of a psychiatrist, a clinical psychologist, or a psychotherapeutist. Our counselors can help you understand your current situation and, if needed, recommend further treatment. If our counselors are unavailable, you can find contact information for additional services below.

Crisis intervention

In case of an acute crisis or life-threatening situation we recommend the following crisis services.

  • Linka bezpečí (“safety line”) telephone number: 116 111
  • Linka první psychické pomoci (“psychical first aid line”) telephone number: 116 123
  • Linka důvěry (24/7 hlepline), České Budějovice – operators can communicate in English and redirect a client to an English speaking counselor. English speaking students and employees of SBU can call the telephone number: +420 387 438 703
  • Crisis center Theia, České Budějovice – 24/7 helpline (an English speaking counselor available) – telephone number: Jitka Mertlíková, +420 728 008 771

Or you can find more information about regional crisis centers online. For a list of Czech crisis lines and counselors visit the website Nepanikar.eu.

The operators of general emergency hotline in the Czech Republic are able to communicate in English and German.

United rescue system line telephone number: 112

There isn't any crisis hotline declared to be operated in English in the Czech Republic, but it's possible to contact (maybe even through Skype or another internet platform) one of the following international crisis hotlines:

  • Samaritans – emotional support in difficult life situation (including self-harming tendencies), originally GB, 24/7 telephone service: +44 84 57 90 90 90 OR e-mail: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
  • US Health Department National Suicide Prevention 24/7 Hotline – telephone number: +1-800-273-8255

Clinical psychologist

A clinical psychologist is a health care specialist who provides therapeutical services covered by health insurance companies. Your health insurance company should be able to provide a list of local clinical psychologists they have contracts with. The availability of clinical psychologists is not guaranteed, and there can often be long wait times. You can find contact information for clinical psychologists on the Nepanikar.eu website.

English-speaking clinical psychologists in private practice with a contract with an insurance company: Mgr. Petra Feglerová (Český Krumlov), Mgr. Eva Kravarová (Písek)

Psychiatrist

In case of more serious mental health issues you can make an appointment with a psychiatrist. A psychiatrist is helpful when your mental health issues negatively affect your everyday life (anxiety attacks, severe mood swings, emotional instability, etc.). Psychiatric services in your specific region can be also found on the Nepanikar.eu website or it can be provided to you by your insurance company.

English-speaking psychiatrists in private practice: MUDr. Marcela Kalná, MUDr. Rostislav Procházka, MUDr. Michal Vodička

The nearest 24-hour psychiatric help is provided at the Psychiatric Department of the České Budějovice Hospital (tel.: 387878701, 387878710). According to its head MUDr. Jan Tuček, Ph.D. (he speaks English), there is always at least one English-speaking doctor in the psychiatric outpatient clinic.

Private therapeutic services

Additional options include paid therapeutical services. Most therapists have websites with information about any psychotherapy trainings they have completed. We recommend choosing a therapist who has gone through psychotherapy training. Also, membership in the Czech association for psychotherapy is an advantage. It's common for clients to try several psychotherapists before finding the right one.

Private psychologists with foreign language skills (working on a direct payment basis): Mgr. Filip Abramčuk, Ph.D. (English), Mgr. Lucie Fenclová (English), Mgr. Yvona Mazehóová, Ph.D. (German), PhDr. Alena Geršlová (English), Mgr. Andrea Anderlová (German), Mgr. et Mgr. Silvie Štindlová, Ph.D. (English), Mgr. Zuzana Bílková, Ph.D. (English, French), Mgr. Zuzana Štefánková, Ph.D. (English, German), Mgr. Zdenka Bajgarová, Ph.D. (English)

Currently some insurance companies offer their clients benefits in the form of financial contributions, including contributions for private psycho-therapeutical support which is paid directly. You can find a list of insurance companies providing these benefits on terapie.cz. You can find a list of therapists who accept these benefits on insurance company websites, e.g. VZP.
